In the Cordilleras, pitch pine (naturally-oiled pinewood ) is commonally used as an alternative to kerosene and can be gathered from the forest. In more remote villages such as in Singnapan valley, kerosene can be difficult to hike in and is relatively expensive for most people. Many times a traditional fire is the only way to have light during the evenings. Many families tend to sleep early and wake up as the sun rises to make the best use of daylight. (Palawan, Philippines)
